Any small business ideas out there?

I recently took a 2 year sabbatical from work as I’ve always hated authority and working for others. I’ve just started working as a driving instructor and I know it will take a couple of months to get my name out threre. Does anyone out there know of other types of self-employment work I could do to supplement my income, also I get bored very easily and could not see myself working as a driving instructor for the rest of my life. I see it as a stepping stone to hopefully better things, any help at all would be very much appreciated.

Think about what you are good at and what you enjoy – then think about what sort of business would fit in with your qualities.

Good on you. I took a year off, and persuaded three American and one German companies to employ me for 3 months each. Boy, did I learn a lot, much more use in business than any MBA. In my time away, I spotted things which I thought were brilliant, but a bit of research revealed that they were not suitable for the UK marketplace. I did discover a product not sold here, and went to see the manufacturer. They had no representation in the UK, so had nothing to lose, and gave me exclusivity. That was 29 years ago, and the partnership has worked wonderfully. So, finding a product or service is the first step. Good luck, what you want to do is a good thing.

My friend, you have one thing going for you – you seem to know yourself. You mention one weakness that will hinder you from becoming a success – you get bored very easily. When we first started out home based catering biz, everyday was exciting as heck. Then it became a routine and even though we are doing what we love, it often feels like a job. I believe it is the same with many, many small business owners.

So you need to ask yourself. When your business is growing and your family depends on the income from your business, what happens when you "feel bored"? The old saying comes to mind – "a rolling stone gathers no moss". There will be many, many times, when you are just going through the motions as a small business owner.

Phew… now that I’ve gotten that off my chest, here’s a site with hundreds of real, practical small business ideas that might just light that entrepreneurial spark in you :

If you’re serious about being your own boss, making an honest income commensurate with the effort you put forth. I have been working with a company for a while and have had great results. If you are interested contact me.

This job can be done over the Internet, over the phone, or in person.

I can see where being a driving instructor has both a reward from teaching others, but also the downside of becoming bored with the repitition. Trick is to spice it up a little.

If you are starting a driver-training business, then you must have plans to hire teachers and expand on the services you provide. It is okay to start a business that has yourself as the only profit center. Your earning potential will max out. Adding teachers, manuals, training devices, etc. will be logical additions. Now you need to spice it up to differentiate yourself.

Teaching basic driving isn’t much different than teaching how to drive big-rigs or even flight instruction. Step up your offerings by teaching real & simulated crash recovery techniques, vehicle-owner maintenance tips, how-to courses in vehicle purchase, driving careers (taxi, limo, armored car, longhaul, escort…). Affiliate yourself with places that sell or maintain cars. Pretty soon you are in the business of selling your knowledge and not having your umpteenth white-knuckle ride down the interstate.

I know your question was about other types of self-employment to consider. My overall point is that there are many, many types of work you could do. Pretty much they will all have similar limitations depending on your financial wherewithall. Best thing is to pick one that you figure you are good at, and dig into it with some energy.
