I have five years as a crime analyst, a criminal justice BA, ten years of health insurance sales and some architecture college courses. The catch is I cannot leave my police agency job until the self employment business grows. I cannot do any insurance investigation, or security based businesses as it is a conflict of interest with work

Have you checked with your agency’s policies? Law enforcement is not a competitive field. Trade secrets are normally shared with other agencies. I don’t know what the conflict would be. Everyone is working towards the same goal.

My agency’s policy just states that we must inform them of any outside employment, your job cannot be unethical, anything that could embarrass the agency, i.e., selling sex toys. We cannot wear our uniform while working. We cannot work in politics.

Until you can start your ‘dream’ company, you may want to consider this. (I’ve been successfully doing this for a year now.) I have a travel agent web-site. It’s put out by a travel agency, I just pay them $30 a month and they give me site that does all the work. I just give out the site address to my friends and co-workers. You can learn more here and sign up if interested …

Sorry, when I started answering your question I had no intention of soliciting you to my business. I thought of it halfway through my answer. I am a law enforcement officer and certified bodyguard.

Whats a growing need?…. anyone heard of any neat ideas that have worked….everyone says find a niche and fill it…but I just cant think of anything.

I have alot of applicable skills……management experience, event/program planning, proposal writing, research, fundraising, marketing…….. I know where to get grants/loans….I can secure income for several months until my self employment income kick in………….

BUT I JUST CANT THINK OF A NEED THAT NEEDS FILLING…….I think that even if I could get suggestions of ideas that other people have already tried it would help me think of my own unique idea

It is extremly difficult to research this on the internet due to thousands of webpages that are the "get rich work from home at your computer" scam………… I am talking about a REAL offline business ( I plan on tapping into the online market too…but right now Im looking for something in the real world)

Ideas? Resources to help me research? …….

plan a very ingenious website…. like the lights of myspace youtube facebook…

hell those 3 alone are making billions each….

pretty neat aye?

I’m trying to put my michigan taxes together and this doesn’t make sense.

Michigan’s 1040 Schedule 1 has, under *Additions to Income*, a box to enter one-half of the self-employment taxes you PAID to the federal government, and adds this as an *addition* to your gross income.
Basically, it’s making me pay taxes on taxes that I paid in addition to my full income!
So… WTF? Whose smart idea was this?
I know I’m paying both the employee and employer portions of the SS, etc. tax. But the MI form confuses me. It takes my full gross income, taxes me on that, and takes half the federal tax I paid and taxes me on that as well. There’s no deductions, it’s an *addition*.

So if half my federal tax was $500, I get taxed twice on that $500 by the state.

What is actually happening is that when you file your Federal Return, in order to come up with your AGI, you are able to deduct 1/2 of your self employment tax from your income. Now, when you file your Michigan taxes, you use the AGI number from your Federal return. (which does not include 1/2 SE tax). So, since the State of Michigan wants all of their money….they make you add the 1/2 SE tax back in. So you’re not being double taxed….just taxed to death.

I am going to get my level 3 golf instructor certification. Hopefully I can get a level 4 level as soon as possible after that. I just would like to know what peoples opinions are on my idea here…I was thinking about constructing a driving range of my own and make income from that and also give group and private lessons there. If a college degree would make a difference Im in the process of getting an associates in business. Is this a good idea. I really like the idea of self employment. My father is a self employed small business owner and I know this doesnt usually happen but he was VERY successful. And also…if anybody knows…about how much does a driving range cost to build?

Here’s a great place to start. Good luck.

Hello!

I can’t think of anything witty or cute! I know this teacher would apprectiate something funny. The main thesis is basically that being self employed is the best job anyone can ever have. (because of pride, hours, no bosses, and controlling your own profit)

Any ideas? Thanks!

I am considering becoming an independent contractor. However, I have no idea how successful my venture will be. Should I even pay these taxes during my first year or wait and see how it goes? I don’t want to get in trouble with the IRS.

Dear SB: You will not get in trouble. The only thing that may happen is you get hit with a small penalty for not paying quarterly. Look at IRS.gov and read about the form 1040ES (estimated payments). Unless you make a ton of money, your first is often a year to coast. Get some help next year with Sch C. and try to minimize any profits legally. Keep meticulous records and receipts. If in Sept. or Oct you see you are having a banner year you can at that time send in some federal income tax.

This advice was prepared based on our understanding of the tax law in effect at the time it was written as it applies to the facts that you provided. Click on my profile to read more. Errol Quinn Enrolled Agent Master Tax Advisor

Hello. I want to start selling things on an Ebay shop that I have made myself at home.
I know I have to pay tax for my earnings and register as self employed. But I have no idea if my craftings will sell or not, or if they will sell for a good enough profit to carry on. Therefore I want to do a trial first of about 2 weeks – to make sure the whole idea works and is worth it. But on the HM Revenue website in the self employment section it states I *must* register immediately or face a fine.
I think that most people on Ebay have not even registered at all…
If my shop idea doesn’t work out and I make no profit I don’t want to have wasted my time registering. So what shall I do?

You have three months in which to register without financial penalty after commencement. That should give you enough time to see how things are going.
No, this wouldn’t come under Capital Gains Tax, but Schedule D. Any tax due would depend on your other income.

I have been self employed in commercial real estate for 3 years and am having the worst year I have ever had (big surprise). I am looking for part time work ideas to make extra income for the next 3-6 months.

Pick up your books and head for an insurance license. Armed with that and your knowledge of commerical business solicit liability, property and casualty, workers comp, to businesses. You can make money faster selling commercial insurance than personal lines.

Is there an easy way to get an idea of what you need to set aside to pay quarterly taxes? I have only been in business two months. Thanks
