The business card is more important than you think, for it is not just a card, but also a business tool of great importance to the future success of your company. Newcomers to the business world may try to do without business cards, thinking that they would just be an added expense on a start up budget that may already be a bit strained. Once they get fully into the business world and see how often b.cards are exchanged among colleagues, they realize that their penny pinching has caused them to neglect an important part of doing business – networking.

Once a business newbie understands the significance of the card, he or she begins to look around for a good b.card printing service that can produce a batch of cards that are professional in appearance. Enough business cards have passed through his or her hands to convince them that having a card that looks good is of primary importance. Watching what others in and out of their business niche do with their business cards has taught them a valuable lesson in how to best use the cards to promote their own company.

In today’s high-tech world, a paper business card can seem a little old fashioned. However, that little rectangle is a powerful instrument when it is used the way it was intended. A business card does the basic function of telling whoever reads it who you are, and what your business is called. It has the information necessary to call you, such as office, home, and cell numbers plus your business email address.

A very important aspect of the business card is the first impression it makes. When people look at your business card, what do they see? A card with a white background, black font, and perhaps a red or a blue logo on it? Or a vividly coloured, attractive card that will stay in the mind’s eye of the viewer for some time to come?

This is why business card printing services are a good idea. The people behind these services are professionals who do professional-quality work. They are capable of producing full colour cards, cards that are printed on both sides and cards that are coloured on one side, black and white on the other side. Business card printing services can take your press ready artwork and design a smashing card around it. Some of these printers have graphic artists on staff. These talented people can help you decide what your finished card will look like.

If you have the artwork and a vague idea of what you would like to see on your business cards, a good business card printing service can bring that idea to fruition for you. If you want quick service at a price that will not break your budget, try an online printing service for your business cards. It is a simple task to email them your artwork and ideas, and discuss them in a series of other emails. Online printing services will email you a proof of your business card with the artwork in place, generally within 24 hours. If you like what you see, you just have to confirm the order. You can have your cards within three to five days under optimum shipping conditions.

While the Internet is filled with a plethora of opportunities for entrepreneurs to take advantage of, many people do not have the money to put down hundreds of dollars to become a member. However, there are a number of inexpensive business ideas you can jump on as well. Here are five ideas for you to look into today.

1. Create a web site

Although it is extremely time consuming and it does not happen over night, creating a web site for yourself to work with provides you with the best chance to make money with. There are really just two charges you will make to get your site up and rolling. You will have to purchase a domain name and pay for hosting, which together can be under ten dollars.

2. Affiliate marketing

Affiliate marketing is a great inexpensive business idea to go with your own web site. There are thousands of affiliate programs to join on the internet and most do not have a start-up cost to join. With so many programs to choose from, it gives you the chance to do something you really enjoy and are knowledgeable with. And there is nothing stopping you from taking on several different programs all at the same time.

3. Freelancing

Much like affiliate marketing, freelancing gives you the opportunity to put your skills and knowledge to use. There is a dire need for several different services on the internet including graphic design, writing, and advertising. Many entrepreneurs either do not have the time or do not have the skill to do everything with their business. This is where you can become a great commodity to other people’s businesses.

4. eBay

It is amazing how some businesses and companies come out of nowhere and become a hit overnight. eBay is an extremely inexpensive business idea as it requires you to spend no money whatsoever. Who would have ever known you could clean out your crawl space while filling up your wallet.

5. Advertising

Pay-per-click advertising used to be one of the easiest ways to make money on the internet. All it entailed was you placing ads on your web site and getting paid for visitors coming to your site and clicking on the ads. While this opportunity still exists, it has tapered quite a bit. But if your web site receives a heavy traffic flow, you can make quite a bit of money off of people paying you to place their text link or banner ad on your site for exposure.

The Internet is filled with inexpensive business ideas to choose from. It is up to you to take the time to research and find the legitimate opportunities that suite you best.

Sometimes a plain white business card just won’t do. If you are in a creative field, like art, you can be more adventurous with your business card design. You would expect a graphic design business card to be more creative than a lawyer business card.

You also may need to take a risk and try something different if your business cards just aren’t getting people’s attention. Either way, here are some great, creative ideas to get you on the right path to create your own unique business card or other type of calling-card object:

Print business cards on opaque material. That’s right – a see-through card! Using a see-through design is sure to get your card noticed. Of course, you can’t use the back side of these cards for anything extra, but your card will look so impressive you won’t miss using the back side!

Use the card material or card holder to make a connection with your profession. For instance, a SCUBA instructor could put her business card in a clear waterproof bag to prevent it from getting wet. An editor could use a pencil as her business card by printing her info right on the side of the pencil. An architect or builder could use small, thin pieces of wood as their card’s canvas. Just pick something that makes sense with your profession.

Use inexpensive objects as your card’s canvas. You can use just about anything – a clothes pin for a Laundromat, playing cards with the name and contact info scribbled on them for a magician – anything related to your profession.

Place an object on your card that people can use. For instance, a hairdresser could attach bobby pins to her card so that prospects will keep it for the bobby pins. One cool design idea is using the bobby pins to simulate hair coming off a person’s head that is drawn on the card.

Use a stand-up or pop-up card. You can get cards with whatever object you want perforated so that you can bend that segment of the card up, making it 3D. Or you can create your card in a triangle shape or in a hinge shape so that it stands on its own. Make sure to print your info in the direction you want the card to ultimately be standing in.

Tie in some element of your business. A gift shop business card could give off the essence of their business card being a gift in itself by tying a ribbon around the card, or could use a card holder that looks like a small gift wrapped box. This would be an easy idea to implement, since many stores already have these little boxes for their gift cards.

Hopefully some of these ideas sparked a creative, unique idea you can use for your new business cards. Be sure to check out different printing companies online and offline for rate quotes for these types of cards. They will be more expensive, but if you get a few orders from people who normally would have thrown your card away (and you will), it’ll be worth it!

K. MacKillop asked:

There are at least a couple of hundred individual steps in starting up the most basic business the right way. Though none are particularly difficult individually, very few first-time entrepreneurs are knowledgeable about every aspect of a startup. Often, the knee-jerk response is to “hire out” those weaker areas, or just overlook them altogether. Neither of these options is ideal. As a business owner with plans to build a thriving company, it is important that you know and understand the details of each aspect, even if you elect to hire outside or in-house professionals to handle some of the workload.

Often, entrepreneurs have a great idea for a business and know the operations side — what the business does — inside and out, but are less sure about the business side (accounting, marketing, business planning). So, they hire an accountant to set up the books, hire a marketing consultant or ad agency to develop some advertising, and forgo business planning altogether. While “leaving it to the professionals” seems logical, not knowing the details from the beginning will lead to big problems down the road. What happens when that professional is no longer available, or worse, if they didn’t do the job right? How will you know? In most cases, the owners are forced to learn the ropes anyway when something devastating happens.

One entrepreneur definitely learned his lesson the hard way. When he launched his hi-tech installation company, he already had an excellent reputation regarding his skills in designing and setting up intricate home-theater systems. He decided to hire a large, reputable accounting firm to handle the books and trusted that they knew best. After several years of extraordinary success, the current recession hit his business hard. Unfortunately, the way the accounting system was set up did not accurately reflect the financial health of the company. Future contracts were going on the books, incorrectly, as current assets, so the financial statements the owner reviewed showed plenty of cash available. The recession hit, contracts were cancelled, and suddenly the bank account was empty, even though the financials provided by the professional accounting firm showed that the company was in good shape.

Ultimately, the owner was forced into bankruptcy, both professionally and personally. Had he understood how the future contracts were being booked, he would have been able to cut expenses and manage the finances in time to prepare for weaker sales, and would, by his own estimation, survived the downturn, ready to grow again when the economy improved.

Understanding your business’s marketing efforts is also critical. You should know exactly who you expect to buy your product and the best way to reach them. You should be able to analyze the outcomes of each marketing effort and make sound decisions about what works and what doesn’t. One small business relied on an e-mail marketing professional to get the word out about their new product. After dropping nearly ten grand on this firm, a networking contact showed her how to evaluate the cost-per-customer outcome of the effort. Turns out she was paying nearly $100 for each customer gained through this method, and her average sales was around $75. Of course, she was stunned to learn that the business was losing money with each email blast, especially because the professional had been providing statistics that indicated a far more successful outcome. Now, this entrepreneur schedules time each month to evaluate each marketing campaign by the numbers, making changes as needed. She has cut her marketing budget in half while cutting the cost-per-customer to under $5 each!

These are just two painful examples of the downside of relinquishing responsibility of your business to someone else. Successful entrepreneurship does take a lot of time and requires a willingness to become comfortable with all aspects of business ownership. By understanding the details from the beginning, you give your venture the best chance for success and avoid many of the most common pitfalls small business owners face.

Whether you’re starting a business on the side while still employed, a student, or homemaker looking for extra income, or unemployed and trying to figure out what to do, there are plenty of opportunities for you to start up a side business inexpensively. It’s unlikely any of these will make you a living in the first few months, but they all have the potential to grow into full-time businesses. We’ll take a look at 10 such opportunities and, most importantly, tell you what to do with the $20.

1. Web Master

It is what everyone who is ever surfed the Web dreams of-just stick a web site up there and watch the cash roll in! Well, that just does not happen overnight, but the fact of the matter is it is really not very hard to do. To do it right, start by picking a subject matter you know a lot about.

Then get a domain and create a web site. It does not matter what technology you use-just be totally anal-retentive about it looking good and provide plenty of original content. Now find some appropriate affiliate programs-that’s where your revenues are going to come from. Next, learn everything you can about search engine marketing and promote the heck out of your site. Last of all, set aside time every week to put new content on the site, delete dead links, and other maintenance. You might actually make some decent income from it.

Spend the $20 on: $$9 for a domain at GoDaddy and $10 for a year of hosting at Discount Hosting or Cheaps.net.

2. Consultant

Getting into consulting is relatively simple. All you have to do is know how to do something better than most people do, and be able to either teach people how to do it or be willing to do it for them. Networking is the key to success in this business, so start by making a list of everyone you know and giving them all a call.

Spend the $20 on: $14 on a box of clean-edge laser or inkjet business cards and $6 buying your first prospect a cup of coffee one morning.

3. Housesitter/Petsitter

Around the holidays people are looking for housesitters or petsitters to watch their homes and/or monitor their pets. Particularly since 9/11, people feel an increased need for security, and housesitting gives them some reassurance while they’re out of town. This one’s great because it basically requires no particular skills, just trustworthiness and reliability. Be sure to have personal references available, and you’ll also need reliable transportation. If you’re an animal lover, petsitting is an easy add-on.

Spend the $20 on: $2 on flyers to put up on bulletin boards, and the rest on classified ads in your local neighborhood paper (not a big city-wide one).

4. Professional Organizer

People these days are simply overwhelmed by their “stuff.” While there is an ever-growing trend of people wanting to simplify their lives, most of us have not done it yet. It’s not that people really have no clue how to get organized, it just keeps moving to the bottom of the stack, both figuratively and literally. There’s a prime opportunity for people to come in at a reasonable rate and get houses organized. And while there is a National Association of Professional Organizers that you can join where you’re ready, mostly it takes common sense, organizational skills, and a familiarity with what can be had at your local office supply and The Container Store.

Spend the $20 on: Classified ads

5. Avon Independent Sales Representative

Cosmetics is a virtually recession -proof business, because it’s an inexpensive way for people to feel good about themselves. Avon is the largest consumer direct sales company in the world, with annual sales of nearly $6billion. In business for well over 100 years, they have both a highly reputable product line and one of the few highly reputable multi-level marketing structures (in fact, they invented it). They also offer fashion and wellness products in addition to their beauty products. And while they bill themselves as “The Company for Women”, a fairly substantial number of men have actually been very successful as Avon reps. The secret to making a living at it rather than just a little extra spending money is to build your downline-just like with any other network marketing or direct selling business.

Spend the $20 on: $10 signup fee, and $10 on brochures and a few samples

6. Personal Services – Shopping & Errands

This is a great one going into the holiday season. Believe it or not, there are people who would not be caught dead going anywhere near a mall, but they’re not comfortable with buying certain items online, either. Again, trustworthiness and dependability are the key traits for this. If your car’s not reliable, pick something else. Also, you won’t need cash, but you’ll available credit on your credit cards, since you really can not use theirs. Consider an American Express or a Diner’s Club that do not have preset spending limits. Or use a card that gives cash back reward or frequent flyer miles, and you can make a nice little bonus.

Spend the $20 on: $1 on flyers and the rest on classified ads.

7. Desktop Publishing

It’s amazing how many people have a computer and still don’t know how to make a decent flyer! If you’ve got a good design sense, are extremely familiar with your word processor, and already have a laser or high-quality inkjet printer, you can get into desktop publishing. Create a really great-looking portfolio for yourself and go door-to-door.

Spend the $20 on: Some high-quality paper to create your samples on.

8. Tutoring

With the growing dissatisfaction with our education system and the huge growth in homeschooling, there’s an unprecedented need for tutors these days for kids of all ages-even adults! If you’ve got a topic you can tutor in, contact the local schools, particularly private ones, and local homeschool groups, and offer your services. Don’t be concerned if your topic is highly specialized-even those are in demand.

Spend the $20 on: $14 on a box of clean-edge laser or inkjet business cards and $6 on flyers.

9. eBay Seller

Yes, there really are people who make a decent living buying things at garage sales and flea markets and selling them on eBay. The big secrets – Stick to products you know (or learn before you start) extremely well, package your goods carefully, and provide impeccable customer service. It helps to have a digital camera or a scanner, but it’s not required.

Spend the $20 on: Your first inventory at a garage sale.

10. Secretarial Service – Typing/Transcription/Proofreading

Many small businesses and individuals have a need for these services, but not enough need to hire a temp through an agency. Assuming you’ve got a computer, a printer, and e-mail (and the necessary skills), you’re all set. Be prepared to charge by the job, not by the hour.

Spend the $20 on: $14 on a box of clean-edge laser or inkjet business cards and $6 on flyers.

One last thing -beware of home-based business scams that require a substantial buy-in, such as envelope-stuffing or craft item assembly. You may not lose money on it if you stick with it long enough to get ready fast at it, but you’ll probably never make the kind of money you’ve expecting to. Better to do something on your own.

Online loans: quick tips for first time buyers
Unless you have a large amount of cash on hand, the most affordable way to buy a car is to get it through a loan. A car loan will allow you to budget your finances better, and give you increased flexibility in payment. You may just have graduated from college and landed a good-paying job – the next best move is to start building up your credit record. And one of the ways to do that is to get an auto loan. Going online is a great start!
If you are a first time applicant for an online auto loan, there are some important things to remember to make your experience truly gratifying. Determine how much you will be able to amortize on your car loan each month to avoid overspending. One of the most common problems that young professionals encounter is that of overspending. Be a diligent buyer and know your limits! Stick to your budget, otherwise you will be starting on the wrong foot.
When applying online for auto loans, prepare yourself with the documents needed to save on time. Online insurance companies will usually get back to you in a day or two after submitting your application and requirements. As a precautionary tip, remember to apply only to insurance companies with a good background. If at all possible, choose one that has been in the industry the longest. A strong history will prove the stability of the company and will ensure that your investment is in good hands.

The largest growing business opportunities today is the sales that transpires from one business to another business. We call this the “Business-to-Business” sales field as the business who is selling products only sales to other businesses not to private citizens. This is the way that “Business-to-Business sales first started and this type of sales was referred to as wholesale. Wholesale business became popular when larger business owners needed a place to pick up products for resale for their local customers. The wholesale business would buy up products cheap from the market and resale to local business owners at a discounted rate so that they could resale making money. Everyone seems to profit from this type of business and the consumer foot the bill.

A man by the name of Sam Walton decided to make a difference for the smaller business owner and the general public by opening up wholesale products to everyone by starting what is called a “club.” The club as he referred to it gave the small business owner the right to get his products cheaper and the average citizen the chance to buy in bulk if they wanted. The name of this wholesale resale was dubbed Sam’s Club. This idea caught on and soon others decided to do the same thing soon there was the opening of Price Costco another wholesale club. You have to be a business owner in order to buy products and of course you must prove it by showing your licenses. The wholesale clubs cannot charge you taxes on your products because you must pass that on to the consumers. This was a great idea from the onset but places like Sam’s Club soon drove others from the market place. Many cities started to complain as Sam’s Clubs moved into their areas putting the smaller business out of business.

People realized that they could buy products at a wholesale price by becoming a member and since the membership fee was so small for the year found that the savings far outweighed the cost. Then of course since many people prefer not to buy in bulk the idea of opening up a retail chain store next to the club only seemed a natural course of events. The birth of Wal-mart stores across the nation happened overnight making it impossible for the small business person to remain in business. This did not seem to affect the buying power of the average citizen who preferred the larger chain stores and clubs to the small town business. There still remains a multitude of small business owners today in every town and city in America and most of them buy their products from places like the club at a wholesale price The two have eventually learned how to live successfully together side by side in doing “Business-to-Business sales.

J Hutchinson asked:

I re-visit business ideas and working options for a recession. I also re-visit Professor Paul Zane Pilzer’s earlier predictions. Earlier this year I wrote about why I believe home based internet businesses will soar over the next few years. As it turned out the title was a little misleading as I got side-tracked into putting forward ideas set out by Professor Paul Zane Pilzer. Pilzer has the uncanny knack of accurately predicting economic trends and has been doing so for over 20 years. Despite the slightly misleading title this article has been read by hundreds of people.

What I had intended to communicate was that the economic downturn – it wasn’t a recession then – would bring thousands of people to the internet looking for information on developing business ideas for a recession. The reason being that more and more people would begin to see the necessity of developing multiple streams of income to secure their financial future.

I used ideas from Professor Pilzer to support and encourage this. Some of these ideas included the assertion that the economy was in great shape. In fact, he said, it was in the middle of its greatest growth spurt in history.

Another of Pilzer’s assertions was that the age of the corporation, barely a century old, was now giving way to the age of the individual entrepreneur. He predicted that the economies of scale, which supported large corporations, no longer applied. Because of this, huge corporations were splitting up into smaller units. Taken further this meant that individual entrepreneurs would now accumulate the wealth that would have gone to the corporations. This would create 10 million millionaires over the next 10 years (US alone).

Now you could see the logic in that provided the economy was indeed going through its greatest growth spurt in history. But is it?

Answer. Yes it is. What is happening at the moment is part of the dismantling of the large corporations. Admittedly, it is extremely painful for many people with more pain to come.

However, this is your opportunity as an individual entrepreneur to step forward and claim your share of the wealth.

But how?

Well Paul Zane Pilzer was particularly talking about the network marketing field for these business ideas. However, he also mentioned the speed of technological change and the opportunity that arises for you if you can close the technology gap. It is his belief that the internet has barely gotten started.

As an internet entrepreneur, whether internetwork or online marketing, you have this tremendous opportunity to help others into this field. As the recession bites even harder, millions of people worldwide will look to you to get them started. This will create residual income for your lifetime.

Internetwork marketing is the new term for MLM that is properly done by use of the internet and Attraction Marketing. Another of Pilzer’s observations, and this has been said by a number of the great entrepreneurs, is that your wealth is rewarded directly in proportion to the number of people with whom you are willing to share.

This is exactly what internetwork marketing is about and is how residual income is generated. However, this can apply equally to other types of online business.

One of Paul Zane Pilzer’s most telling comments was: “… today, working for yourself is actually the safer route, and working for a corporation has become the riskier proposition.”

No matter who we want to blame, there are thousands and thousands of displaced workers around the globe who would agree with this observation. Change has come. Business ideas are changing. Working options are changing.

Step forward to claim your share of the wealth.

Ross Lincoln asked:

In an age of catastrophic population growth and shrinking job opportunities, why not take a look at putting up your own business? There has never been a better time to be an entrepreneur. No, it is not too late nor it is too early to open for business.

If you choose to try your luck at having your own business, start right by keeping your business idea fountain flowing. The many enterprises you see today, from the ones you see in your neighborhood to the ones you read about in the business section of various broadsheets, are once merely ideas; they are products of one’s fertile imagination and spirit of innovation.

Know Thyself

First things first, to be an effective business owner someday, you must know yourself. Ask yourself if you have even the smallest trickle of the characteristics of a successful entrepreneur. While not everybody can be a businessman, the good thing is everybody can learn the skills of how to be a good businessman.

Do you have foresight? Are you creative or imaginative enough to come up with new ideas and products? Are you courageous enough to face the challenges of running your own enterprise? Can you endure criticism and instead channel your frustrations to churning out more innovative business ideas?

Being an entrepreneur is not easy. And the very first step is to know yourself so that you can adapt your ideas to your personality. Thus, you will be able to upgrade your skills or choose a business that suits your character.

Be In The Loop

You would not want to offer fire proof paints with asbestos! Asbestos has been banned for decades now because it has poisonous side effects. To have great business ideas, you should know a lot about what is happening around you. Read the papers or visit trade fairs; this way, you will be sensitive to what is current and what could be the trend in the future in terms of products and services to offer.

Do Not Reinvent The Wheel

You can not offer baked goodies with holes in the middle and call them bread wheels. What you can do is try to improve or create unique toppings and syrups for your goodies and still call them donuts. Forty years ago, computers are found only in science fiction comic books. But today they are as essential as the cooking stove.

As much as your creativity can take you, come up with ideas of new products and services to offer. Nothing beats being the first in an industry. If not, your ideas should try to add more value to existing products and services. Like the story of cellular phones and cameras; they used to be two different gadgets, but now it is not uncommon to see camera phones.

Force yourself to think of new ideas and concepts. This will keep your idea fountain alive and flowing. Besides, it is always a good business sense to venture into new or improved product lines.

Join The Club

There is no point in having excellent business ideas without having the heart to start your own business. Turning the business switch on is different from just having the famed light bulb flashing inside your head. When you are actually starting and running your business, you get the feel of the industry you are in; more and more business ideas will pour out.

Always be aware and prepare yourself when that light bulb in your head blinks. You might never realize it but you will be at a crossroad between living your dreams and living in mediocrity. Good luck on your venture!
